Turquoise... cobalt glass... a piece of the sky... D. azurius's stunning color make the mind drift to clear summer days or deep frigid pools. A living example of the beautiful diversity found in this world. This is a tragic beauty as the frogs have a tenuous existence in the wild.
These stunning blue frogs are found only in a small remnant of rainforest, surrounded by a vast dry grassland. To survive these frogs need stable temperature in the 70s to low 80s with high humidity. Both of which are found in their forest, neither of which are found in the savannah surrounding it. Occasional natural grass fires nibble away at the remnant forest, ever decreasing the size of their forest island.
A particularly dry year or two could destroy the remaining forest and kill all the frogs living in there. Due to the inaccessibility of this rainforest, the outback of Surinam, it may have already happened and we just don't know it yet.
This is a frog to treasure, a truly rare jewel.
